El Picaflor

El Picaflor

El Picaflor (Spanish for hummingbird) is full of colors and full of life. It welcomes you to see folk art from the Andes. The original pieces on display include brilliantly crafted ceramics, colorful and intricate patchwork art, alpaca garments, crafts, and objects used in the traditional folk medicine in the Andes.

We carry the works of Peruvian weaver-painter Maximo Laura. His tapestries are made with alpaca wool and cotton. The motives are either figurative or geometrical stylization of millennial Andean themes in contemporary shapes and colors. We also show Andean retablo-maker Nicario Jimenez. His portable wooden boxes are filled with brightly colored figurines made from a doughy mixture of boiled potato and gypsum powder. His ongoing work is on display throughout the year.

The gallery displays beautifully hand-sewn three dimensional fabric collages with scenes that illustrate the live and experiences of women in the Andes. They are called "arpilleras" and are made out of cloth fragments by co-ops of women in Peru. There is also pottery from the mountains and coastal areas of Peru. "Quinua," pottery pieces are made using native clay to the region of Ayacucho, Peru and they depict musicians, churches, animals, etc. "Chulucana," pottery on the other hand is from the coastal area of Peru and represent everyday life with scenes such as lovers, dancers, and fruit vendors.
