For 50 years, El Rincon has been woven into life at Tlaquepaque. Guests come for its distinctive Arizona Mexican cuisine, but many return for something equally memorable: the feeling of coming home.

Founded in 1976 by Gloria, her daughters Cindy and Candyce, and Dimitri, the restaurant began with a simple but meaningful idea: serve exceptional food, welcome every guest warmly, and create a place people would want to visit again and again.

El Rincon developed its own distinctive style of “Arizona Style” Mexican cuisine, bringing together traditional Mexican and Navajo influences. Its signature Navajo Pizza transforms a full-size sopapilla into a crust topped with beans, red or green chile sauce, cheese, and vegetables. The same hand-rolled sopapilla masa is used to create the restaurant’s distinctive chimichangas, filled with combinations of beef, chicken, shrimp, and green chile. These original dishes remain central to the El Rincon experience, preserving the flavors that generations of guests have come to know while welcoming new visitors to the table.

Over the decades, the restaurant has become part of countless family stories. Children who once visited with their parents now return with their own children and grandchildren. Couples celebrate anniversaries at the same restaurant they first visited on their honeymoon. For locals and visitors alike, El Rincon is more than a familiar place to eat. A FAMILY CARRYING THE LEGACY FORWARD

That sense of family extends behind the scenes, too. Current owners Charley and Luis, together with their daughter Jennifer, were part of the El Rincon family long before taking responsibility for its future. Their stewardship represents not a departure from the restaurant’s past, but a continuation of it. Charley served as the restaurant’s chef, and together they worked alongside Dimitri, one of the original owners, for nearly 30 years.

“El Rincon became our second home,” the family shares. Charley could be found there in the early hours of the morning, seven days a week, eager to prepare for the day.

During those years, Dimitri taught Charley and Luis far more than how to operate a restaurant. He showed them the importance of treating every guest with kindness, every employee with respect, and never compromising on quality or hospitality. He also wanted Charley and Luis to carry El Rincon forward when the time came.

When Dimitri passed away, continuing El Rincon felt less like a business decision and more like honoring a promise. The family was committed to preserving what he and the original owners had created, from the recipes and traditions to the warm welcome at the heart of the restaurant.

AN EXTENDED FAMILY

In addition to Charley and Luis, many members of El Rincon’s staff have worked there for decades, creating a workplace family and a sense of continuity guests can feel each time they return.

The team has celebrated birthdays, welcomed new babies, supported one another through difficult times, and shared countless personal milestones. Over the years, coworkers have become lifelong friends and extended family.

Charley and Luis credit the restaurant’s enduring success to this employee family, who bring El Rincon’s style of hospitality to life each day. Guests experience that connection in small but meaningful ways: a favorite meal or margarita remembered, a preferred table waiting, or a genuine conversation with someone who has welcomed them for years.

It is this extended circle of owners, employees, locals, and returning visitors that makes El Rincon feel like home. New guests are welcomed into that circle from the moment they arrive, whether they live nearby or are discovering Tlaquepaque for the first time.

After half a century, El Rincon’s next chapter remains grounded in the same values that have guided it from the beginning. Recipes are passed forward, employees become extended family, and generations of guests continue to find a place at the table where they feel at home.
